TAIPEI: Taiwan superstar Jay Chou as admitted in a recent interview with a Taiwan men's fashion magazine that he feared marriage.

The singer, who was once romantically linked to soon-to-be-married television host Patty Hou, told the magazine that he did not have an urge to marry despite Hou's impending nuptials.

"Sometimes, I am glad that I am not the guy getting married. Watching them march into the wedding hall, having a wife and children, actually feels like a mirror which tells me not to get hitched too early. My heart will cry out that being single is great," said the 31-year-old.

He also could not understand why the public is interested about his future marriage plans.

"I don't understand why everyone is so concerned, my mother is not even worried," said Chou.

When asked if he liked a certain type of girl, Chou said that he "did not have specific requirements" but believed it was important to have "the right feeling" when choosing a girlfriend.

As to whether he will put his girlfriend first, Chou revealed that he is no sellout and that his friends will always rank highly on his priority list.

"When I am in a relationship, I will focus on my girlfriend, but my buddies will remain very important to me," said Chou.

TAIPEI: Taiwan television host Patty Hou is getting married "in the coming months" and former squeeze, singer Jay Chou, will not be present.

Speaking to the press at a Shanghai event on Wednesday, Hou, 32, readily answered queries from the media about her upcoming nuptials to banker Ken Huang, 34.

She said that after her high profile romance with Taiwanese superstar Chou, 31, she would prefer to stay low-key, also in respect of the wishes of her elders.

Hou also implored the media not to disturb her fiance as he is not a public figure and is not used to the limelight.

Revealing details about the marriage, Hou said she wants a very simple wedding with close friends and family. It will be in the coming months, though a date as yet to be set.

As to whether ex-boyfriend Chou is invited, Hou candidly answered, "He is a big star, [I] do not want to trouble him. Everyone's schedule is very tight, so I am not inviting celebrity friends." She joked that she did not want the big stars to outshine her on her special day.

Responding to pregnancy rumours, Hou replied negative. She does, however, look forward to having her own baby.

"I think I will have a baby one or two years later," she said. Although her child will be her top priority, she does not want to be a stay-at-home mum.

"I have not completely thought out the plan after marriage, but I feel that I like this job very much and hope to continue," Hou said.

Hou wants to have a daughter, and said that their relationship would mirror her own relationship with her mother, "just like sisters" with no secrets between them.

Male singers avoiding Jay's May album release

Like an annual affair, Jay Chou's decision to release his new album this May has left other singers scurrying to change their own release dates.

As of now, two former Golden Melody best singers, Gary Chaw and Wang Leehom, have confirmed changes in the dates of release for their upcoming albums.

The only big-name male artistes slated to release their album in May are the ensemble rock group Superband, but insiders observed that they have a different target market.

Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou currently has nine albums to his name, and barring the first self-titled album, has been the biggest-selling artiste in Asia.

After focusing on film and TV production for more than a year, with the critically panned The Treasure Hunter and Pandamen, and a cameo in the Yuen Woo-ping wuxia biopic True Legend, the 31-year-old will return to his first love, starting with the May album followed by a concert tour in June.

Reports said his latest musical venture sees him experimenting with the Lady Gaga-inspired electronic genre. Trademark styles like soft rock and zhong guo feng will also feature.

When contacted, Rock Records said Gary's English album is postponed not as a response to the above news, but because studio recording has been delayed.

Leehom's latest album, originally scheduled to be released last month, has been pushed back till after summer.

But female singers, apparently, aren't worried about clashing head-on with the multi-platinum Jay. Delivering albums in the same month include Malaysian singer-songwriter Penny Tai and Taiwanese songbird Claire Kuo.

THIS might be sad news for Jay Chou fans: The Taiwanese pop star/actor prefers not to have overly intimate scenes in his movies.

The reason?

He wants to come across as a decent guy.

“It’s a matter of image, it’s very important. I cannot be kissing so freely,” said the 30-year-old star candidly in Mandarin, at a press conference held at Raffles City Convention Centre yesterday.

He was in town to promote his latest film, The Treasure Hunter, also starring Lin Chi-ling.

He added: “You don’t necessarily need to kiss to portray deep emotions.”

Chou was in town with Lin, 35, and Taiwanese director Kevin Chu to promote the action movie, which opens next Thursday.

The film, touted to be National Treasure meets The Mummy, sees Chou playing a roguish treasure hunter, Ciao Fei, who is forced to hand over a valuable map of a lost city in exchange for the life of his mentor’s daughter, Lan Ting (played by Lin).

Teaming up with a famous archaeologist, they set off to recover the map and protect the ancient treasure buried beneath the city.

Lin said the role – her second acting gig so far – is her most challenging one yet.

The leggy beauty had to film in a desert in Hengdian – a small town in Dongyang of central Zhejiang province of China – for three months, even suffering a cut to her face that became infected.

The two leads share a couple of romantic sequences in the US$15 million (S$21 million) film, but do not have any kissing scenes.

Nor can you expect any scenes where they tumble into bed together.

Rumour has it that Lin convinced the director to remove the only kissing scene with Chou.

When asked about it, Lin said Chu hadn’t had plans for any intimate scenes between the two at all.

“From the film, you can tell that the relationship between Ciao Fei and Lan Ting is a very pure and ambiguous one, with the characters not saying what they mean. He intentionally left a space for the audience to guess and imagine what their relationship is,” she explained.

Lin, who was first seen in John Woo’s 2008 historical epic, Red Cliff, added that her chemistry with Chou was “very good”.

“Filming with him was very comfortable as we knew each other before taking on this project,” she said.

“We can communicate well and give each other suggestions on how to act better... Jay is a very creative person, so his ideas inspire me to improve on my character,” she added.

When asked – given their chemistry – whether there were moments where she felt as though there might be a stronger connection, she smiled knowingly.

“I wouldn’t dare, he has too many fans,” she said with a laugh.

CHOU’S GIRLS

Just as well that Lin wouldn’t make a move on her co-star. Chou – who first broke out in movies in Hong Kong flick Initial D (2005), for which he won a Golden Horse Award – revealed that because of his star status, starlets are afraid to be seen with him.

“If we get shot by the paparazzi, people will immediately assume (that whoever I’m with) is my girlfriend. It is unfair for the girls,” he said.

“I don’t have any way of clearing my name, or theirs. The more I try to speak, the more mistakes I make,” he added.

Chou has been linked to pop star Jolin Tsai, as well as TV host Patty Hou and singer Jessie Chiang. Chou has been upfront with the media only about his relationship with Hou, whom he dated in 2005.

But he reassured the press that the next time he is with someone for real, he’ll confirm the relationship just so they won’t have to speculate, he said
wryly.

Chou’s star is on the rise, especially with his first foray into Hollywood.

He recently nabbed a role in the movie remake of The Green Hornet, alongside Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz, and will be playing the superhero’s sidekick, Kato.

Filming is still ongoing in Hollywood, and the film is scheduled to be released in December next year.

Even though he has been in the entertainment industry for 10 years now, Chou said acting in Hollywood was still an entirely different ball game for him.

“Over there, I feel like I’m a newbie. I have to wait very long before getting started on filming my scenes) and I cannot speak too loudly. I have to be well-behaved. It was fun; a good experience,” he said with a smile.

honestly, would you go and watch the new movie, " Treasure Hunter" ?

i want your honest feedback.

as for me, i think i would go watch it,

although it doesn't seem very nice and appealing like other blockbusters,

but because of jay's sake, i might catch it.

However, if i were to miss the chance to head down the cinemas to catch this movie,

i don't think i would be upset at all.

Directed by Taiwanese director Kevin Chu, Treasure Hunter depicts a story of a chivalrous young man, Qiao Fei (Jay Chou) who risks it all and attempts to defeat an unscrupulous organization by protecting the treasure. The movie cost up to S$21,000,000 to produce, and also stars leggy Taiwanese supermodel, Lin Chi-ling alongside Eric Tsang, Chen Daoming, Chen Chuhe, and Will Liu.

Singapore will be the first stop for the movie's 11-day promotional tour. Lead actors Jay and Chi-ling will both arrive in Singapore on December 20 before they head to Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan.

There will be a photographic display of the movie at the entrance of Plaza Singapura till October 31. Shoppers will be able to catch a sneak peek of the movie with over 20 photographs on display.

Jay Chou's 'Pandamen' super guest line-up exposed; exclusive cast photos revealed

Jay Chou’s self-directed drama ‘Pandamen’ has already finished filming, and is currently in post-production. This drama not only stars Jay Chou, Jessie Chiang, Nan Quan Ma Ma, Tang Yan, Wang Jing, Will Liu, Guo Yao Zhong, even the guest stars are big names.

Earlier, Eric Tsang, Wilber Pan, Jerry Yan, Shawn Yue, Vincent Fang, Jiu Kong, Li Guo Xiu, Tian Jing Quan & An Ze Hao’s guest-star photos in ‘Pandaman’ were revealed. Not only did they display the drama’s big guest line-up, the cast photos looked amazing and exciting, bringing a strong impact to the audiences’ eyes.

Yesterday, Jay Chou accepted an interview, and expressed his thanks towards all the guest stars in ‘Pandamen’. He said: “Pandamen’s guest stars are actually all my good friends, they are very loyal and are willing to help me.” According to Jay’ introductions, these guest stars are not only ‘loyal’ to come and star in the drama, but during filming, every single one of them displayed their professionalism, and made him very touched.

Wilber Pan injured but still continues to film

When Will received an invitation to star in ‘Pandamen’, it actually clashed with his album promotion schedule. And earlier, because he was intensely practising dancing for his album, he accidentally injured his right hand. When he came to film ‘Pandamen’, his hand was even bandaged, but when filming officially started, the professional Will removed his bandages, and everyone could not help but give him a thumbs-up in praise. Jay was very worried about his injury, and during break times, he would often touch his hand in concern, asking him: “Is it okay?” But Will joked back: “I realized you really love touching my hand!” Everyone looked suspiciously at Jay, and Nan Quan Mama’s Devon (Dan Tou) joked: “Actually, Will is Jay Chou’s other ‘J-Girl’!” making everyone burst into laughter.

Shawn Yue plays baddie

From the photos of Shawn Yue, his golden hair makes him look extremely ‘bad boy’; his cool image looks very different from the previous sunny, handsome Shawn. Previously in ‘Kung Fu Dunk’, Eric Tsang & Jay Chou had extremely exciting fight scenes, and from then on, the 2 established a very good friendship. Jay Chou plays Detective Leo, and Jerry Yan plays his colleague Detective Chen. In order to crack the villain gang ‘Violent Group’, the 2 detectives share weal and woe, and they both even get injured, and suffer quite a lot. Not only are they good ‘brothers’ outside of the drama, but even in the drama, they are quite close.

Refined lyricist Vincent Fang transforms into an arms dealer

Even Vincent Fang is beginning to film television series, and we can only imagine ‘Pandamen’ and Jay’s charm. Over the years, Vincent has always collaborated with Jay, writing lyrics for him, and the 2 have together created a unique musical world. And Vincent, whose own personality is similar to his refined lyrics, actually transforms into an arms dealer who is surrounded by beautiful women in the drama. His character is very ‘explosive’ and is definitely a strong breakthrough for Vincent.

Li Guo Xiu – dean of Taiwanese theatre joins ‘Pandamen’

Liu Guo Xiu is dubbed the dean of Taiwanese theatre. From 1976, he has produced almost 40 stage dramas, and is currently an associate professor at Taipei’s University of Arts. But the reason for him coming to star in ‘Pandamen’ is quite amusing. Apparantly, Li Guo Xiu’s family are all fans of Jay, and in order to fulfil his family’s ‘star’ wish, he went to find Jay, and hence he is also a guest star in ‘Pandamen’.

Jiu Kong appears as villain

Taiwan’s famous comedian Jiu Kong also guests in this drama. Whenever he appears at any event, there will be constant laughter following. Earlier, in Ning Hao’s ‘Crazy Racer’, Jiu Kong made everyone laugh non-stop. In ‘Pandamen’, he plays a big villain ‘Mole’ and will try live up to his comedian status.

Mainland actor An Ze Hao will play ‘strict father’

An Ze Hao, whose appearance is rather unique is a mainland actor, who always plays ‘baddies’. He was the lead for many television series such as ‘True Confession’, ‘Tomorrow I Am Not A Lamb’, and ‘Around The Home’. However, this time in ‘Pandamen’, he won’t play a baddie but has actually got quite a good role. He will be playing Jessie Chiang’s character Xiao Yu’s dad, who is also the principal of the music school. An Ze Hao expressed: “Pandamen consists of a young team, and I have actually learnt quite a lot filming with these young people.”An Ze Hao has quite a few scenes with Jessie in the drama. From the cast photos, his outfits follow the luxurious European clothing style, but he still looks very humorous. According to sources, after ‘Pandamen’ finished filming, An Ze Hao earlier returned to China, and is currently preparing for his new drama.

‘Pandamen’ investor transforms into ‘Chief Villain’

Amongst ‘Pandamen’s guest stars, the most important character is Tiger Brother. And this character is definitely even more lengendary.

Tiger Brother is the chief villain in ‘Pandamen’. His followers include Wolf (played by Will Liu), Mole (played by Jiu Kong), Luo Han (played by Shawn Yue) etc, and ‘Tiger Brother’ is the central figure in criminal gang ‘Violent Group. And he is the character which Panda Superman (played by Yuhao), Panda Heroic (played by Devon), Detective Leo (played by Jay) and Detective Chen (played by Jerry) are all hunting for. And just when everyone was wondering who is most suitable to play such an important character, ‘Pandamen’ investor Tian Jing Quan entered Jay’s ‘visual field’.According to Jay’s introduction, Tian Jing Quan ‘President Tian’ is one of ‘Pandamen’s investors. He is the general manager of Beijing Jiu Zhou Culture Communication Co., Ltd, and is also Jay’s old friend. During casting of ‘Pandamen’, Jay coincidentally bumped into President Tian while he was on a business trip, and that day, he was dressed in a black suit, with big black sunglasses, and his rather rebellious temperament caught Jay’s eyes. Hence, Jay immediately decided that President Tian would be the perfect choice for Tiger Brother! Because whether it’s posture or his imposing manner, President Tian is very suitable for this role.

During the filming process, besides Tiger Brother, he had another name called ‘Tian One Take’ and when Jay was asked about this, he laughed and explained: “Because during filming, President Tian always just requires one take and its perfect, his acting is very good! And sometimes, it’s already good, but he himself is not satisfied and would say that if he filmed another take, it would be better!” So why is the investor’s acting even better than professional actors? After careful studying, it was found that President Tian actually graduated from China University of Opera. The drama crew expressed that actually, Tiger Brother can be considered as a main lead in ‘Pandamen’ but because of President Tian is also one of the investors, he felt that it’s not convenient to be too exposed, so he attributed himself to the ‘guest’ list. In the drama, mainland actress Liao Jian Ling also specially guests, and plays Tiger Brother’s girlfriend.

Jay Chou’s ‘little brother’ also guests in ‘Pandamen’

Compared with the other famous guest stars, Huai Chen is probably the most unfamiliar face in ‘Pandamen’. According to Jay’s personal introduction, Huai Chen is actually his ‘little brother’: “He was my classmate in primary school. When we were little, I thought that he looked like a cartoon character, and unexpectedly now that we’re older, we actually have the chance to collaborate in ‘Pandamen’. Jay said that Huai Chen plays another baddie, and earlier, he also guested in the MV of his song ‘Hair Like Snow’.

Other than this, the most interesting thing is that ‘Pandamen’s scriptwriter Fa Tiao - Taiwan’s famous online writer will also guest in the drama as a piano teacher.

I pretty much doubted how good this movie was going to be and now with this big cast built up and Jay's creativity, this is definitely going to be a good one despite a few of the actors choosen are not exactly experienced actors.The amout of viewers will definitely be a bomb.

Hey yooo everyone I am new to this blog and this is my first time posting!!!! I feel so honoured to be posting on this blog muahahaha :D Thank you Jacyln for recruiting me!!!!

Ok as everyone knows, Jay is SUPER busy, with his invovlements in Pandamen and his other movies. Even he is not sure whether his new CD will be able to make it by the end of the year. Also, according to jaychoustudio.com, about half of the 10 songs in his new CD will be china-styled (中国风) songs.

To me, if the CD comes out with 5 of them being 中国风 songs, I think I will be quite disappointed. To me one or two is fine, but 5??? It is a bit over the edge already. But if the other songs are very nice, then its okay :D

I must have faith in Jay. But I dunno why I juz cant stop worrying about his new CD. I really want it to be a good one, cos if not all my frens will juz laugh at Jay and talk loads of bad things about him and tell me that I shud stop being crazy over him. I can stand it if they juz tease me, but I really go mad when they laugh at him, and it hurts me. *Bleah*

Conclusion: Of course I hope that Jay will have his new CD this year. But if the songs are not as good as expected, I would rather not have one this year, but focus on making the new CD a real good one only next year. How bout you?? What do you all think?? Of course, these are juz my opinions, so pls dun get angry if you have diff opinions :)

The results for The Association of Music Workers in Taiwan 2008 have come out, Jay Chou once again becomes the big winner.

The chart for this association is seen as an indication of the GMAs, if this is indeed real, Jay Chou, who has been left out in the cold for many years by the GMAs, has a real chance to shine at the GMAs.

According to reports, every year The Association of Music Workers in Taiwan announce the top ten albums and singles. On the 26th of March, the crew inadvertently revealed while being interviewed that the female lead has already been chosen, newcomer Tiffany Tang is going to become "panda girl", she will be playing the leading role in Jay Chou's new series. Tiffany Tang has always been a newcomer who has been pushed strongly by Orange Sky Entertainment, last year she starred in "Storm Warriors", "Chinese Paladin 3", "Xun Zhao Cheng Long", etc... every one of them is a big production involving the very best from both shores. I wonder whether have you all seen Jay's interview with Chen Lu Yu on A Date With Lu Yu?

BEIJING, Feb. 18 -- Pop star-turned director Jay Chou thinks Chinese people lack a superhero who can rival Spiderman and Batman, so he is determined to create two, not one, Panda-men

Chou on Monday held a press conference in Beijing to introduce the concept for his small-screen directorial debut, "Pandamen".
"We have seen such Western superheroes as Spiderman and Batman," said Chou, "but Chinese people need their own heroes, and that will be the pandamen."
"Pandamen" depicts two future superheroes in the year 2030 who fight to protect the city they live in. A rendering of the superpanda unveiled at the press conference shows a human-like panda wearing tight, leather suit and a red scarf resembling the cape of Superman.
Chou, who is also an actor, will appear in the drama but not as the pandamen, the star says. The two protagonists will be portrayed by Devon Song and Zhan Yuhao from the Taiwan music group Nan Quan Mama.
Shooting will begin on February 25.

A few days ago, after they denied the female lead in the series 'Pandamen', directed by Jay Chou, was going to be Sara and Jacqueline Li, this has become a main focal point of movie fans' attention. Today there's finally new news, Jay Chou has seen a performing arts student Cao Yan (20) of Zhejiang University of Performing Arts, she has big eyes and eyebrows, completely matching Jay Chou's criteria. From the details, she is from Zhejiang Ningbo, she has a certain level of performing arts fundamentals, with the help of Jay Chou, she'll definitely be a big star in the movie industry.Yesterday reporters found out from the head of the Pandamen series Mr Li, at present Jay Chou's company have already signed Cao Yan and she will be the female lead in Pandamen, as to why Cao Yan was chosen to be the 'J Girl', the film company expressed they would give an introduction at the start of filming ceremony to let the media get familiar with this lucky girl. Taiwanese multi-hyphenate Jay Chou will star in "Ci Ling" a period action film from the producers of his 2008 Asian hit "Kung Fu Dunk," it was confirmed by his management company JVR.

Film, about time-traveling lovers in Genghis Khan's Mongolia, will reunite Chou with "Dunk" director Chu Yen-ping. The film will be produced by Taiwanese production company Chang Hong.

The announcement puts to rest rumors that Chou would next appear in "Kung Fu Dunk 2." Unlike other Asian singer-actors, who regularly juggle hefty music careers with slates of film appearances, Chou has been selective about movies, appearing in only a handful of lead roles in four years.

"We have already brought the combination of kung fu and basketball to the top with 'Kung Fu Dunk,' and the worst thing for cinema is to be repetitive and stale, which is why we have decided to make a fresh, action-packed adventure," said Wu Dan, chairman of shingle Chang Hong.

Released in February, "Kung Fu Dunk" scored the 10th-biggest opening weekend of all time at the Chinese box office with $6.9 million and cumed $15.9 million.

"Ci Ling" is slated to lense in March with for a Chinese New Year release in 2010.

Jay Chou and his mother Ye Hui Mei are very close, in consideration for his mother's feelings, he rarely talks about his father in public events. But in recent years his father has retired, the filial Jay was afraid he would be bored so he thought about investing in a stars' second hand clothes business for his father to manage, "But my father's thoughts are very naive, it seems like he has no business brain, and I didn't want him to get exhausted, that's why I'm still thinking of what I can let him do."

The story begins from the 1930s, spanning over 70 years till modern day.

Juxiang is born into a big Peranakan family where her mum is a mistress. She is gentle, beautiful and a fantastic cook. Born deaf-mute, she is ostracized by people. Right before the Japanese Occupation in Singapore, she is forced to marry a rich Peranakan as a mistress. Juxiang resists the marriage and runs away from home. She then meets a young Japanese photographerand after many obstacles, they finally get married and Juxiang gives birth to a daughter Yue Niang. During the World War, Juxiang is tortured and both her husband and her dies leaving behind their 8-year-old daughter.

Yue Niang is passed around families and eventually ends up at her grandfather's house. Under the supervision of her grandmother, Yue Niang learns to cook Peranakan dishes and sewing. She grows up looking exactly like her mother and is exceptionally beautiful. After the war, her maternal relatives who ran away to England to seek refuge during wartime return home. Yue Niang then leads the life of her mother – always discriminated, beaten up and tortured. She puts up with all these in order to protect her grandmother.

Yue Niang's pretty looks incurs jealousy from her cousin and attracted many rich Peranakans to chase after her. However, she only has eyes for penniless driver Chen Xi.

Chen Xi actually comes from an educated and wealthy family. He hides his identity to be with Yue Niang. Yue Niang's kindness, pureness and persistence move Chen Xi and he loves her deeply too. Unfortunately, their relationship is filled with many obstacles and difficulties. Under pressure from his family, Chen Xi is forced to marry Yue Niang's cousin instead. Yue Niang is then sold to a butcher, Liu Yi Dao.

Yue Niang is unwilling to accept the fact that her life is always manipulated by others and decides to end her own life. Yue Niang's strong personality impresses Liu Yi Dao and they become sworn siblings instead. Yue Niang decides to choose her own path in life. She begins learning how to run a business and in the process, she is framed and ousted from her business. Although she is badly hit, she manages to overcome the odds and save her declining family business. Sadly, her love life has yet to begin a new chapter with no news about her lover, Chen Xi.

The 15th day, Chap Goh Meh

'Chap Goh Meh' is a Hokkien dialect which means 'Fifteenth Night' is a significant celebration whereby majority of Chinese which are Hokkien (Fujian).
It is the last day of the New Year celebration, this day is also the Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day, as unmarried Chinese ladies toss tangerines into bodies of water, expressing fond wishes for good husbands.
This day is also celebrated as the Lantern Festival, as families walk down the streets bearing lit lanterns, and lit candles are set outside houses to guide stranded ghosts home.

Tangerines or Mandarin oranges toss is a traditional culture popularized by South East Asia Chinese as a means for a single lady to find for her life partner.
In the past several decades, the maidens would ride along coastal roads to toss the oranges into the sea with the wish to find a good spouse.
Chap Goh Meh was also the only night of the year that the unmarried women were allowed to meet up or went on a date with their sweethearts.

Many years back, tossing or throwing oranges was organised as a competition whereby a team were made up of females and
males and be placed at different location according to their gender.
Thousands of Mandarin oranges will be tossing
by ladies from the shore towards the sea.
Then, these oranges were supposed to be
scouped and collected by their male team partners on a boat. And the team with most tangerines would be the winner in this match!

While in traditional Chinese culture, the Fifteenth Night
is also celebrated as Lantern Festival.
Lantern Festival is also mistakenly called for Mid Autumn Festival in Malaysia/Singapore whereby it is associated with moon cakes.
However, the original Lantern Festival is known as Little New Year
that marks the official ends of Chinese New Year.
During this auspicious day, children will be visiting
temples with paper lanterns and having fun trying
to solve the riddles on the lanterns.

Among the Chinese pop artists that emerged during the early 2000s R&B renaissance, no one has found success in as many forms of mass media as Jay Chou. In his ten years in the entertainment industry, he has become one of the biggest pop acts in Asian music and one of the most successful young actors in Asian Cinema as well. He's even become one of the most successful young directors in contemporary Chinese Cinema with a hit debut film. And to think - he started his entertainment career as a failing contestant on a talent show.

Musical Pioneer - Jay Chou the Musician
Jay Chou began to play the piano from the age of 4 and even majored in piano in high school, where he began writing songs. While he was working as a waiter, his friend entered a music talent show and enrolled Jay to accompany her on piano. Even though they lost, popular Taiwanese entertainment figure Jacky Wu, who was the host of the talent show, decided to take him on as a songwriter. Wu also paired Jay up with lyricist Vincent Fang, who would become his closest collaborator. Since 1998, Jay Chou has written at least 114 songs for other artists, including Jacky Wu, Landy Wen, Leehom Wang, Leo Ku, Edmond Leung, Jolin Tsai, Eason Chan, S.H.E., and three of Hong Kong's Four Heavenly Kings (sans Leon Lai), just to name a few.

In late 2000, just before his 22nd birthday, Jay released his self-titled debut album Jay. Featuring a unique mix of R&B, hip-hop, ballads, and even traditional Chinese melody all written by Jay himself, the album caught Chinese pop music fans around the world by surprise and turned the young singer-songwriter into an overnight star. For ballad fans, there are the acoustic guitar-driven "Starry Mood" and the karaoke-friendly hit "Black Humor". For R&B fans, there are "Adorable Woman" and "Bullfighting". There are even tracks such as "Wife" and "Old Indian Turtledove" for fans of alternative hip-hop. With his unique genre blending and now-signature slurred vocals, Jay almost became an instant music sensation throughout Asia. In 2001, the young star won 15 major music awards from Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This was only the beginning of Jay Chou's reign over Chinese pop music.

On the heels of Jay's success, the singer quickly churned out a second album within ten months, thus beginning the tradition of the yearly Jay Chou album. Fantasy is both a continuation and a deviation from the style established in Jay. The album opens with the mid-beat R&B ballad "Love Before A.D.", which features Jay's usual slurred vocals and a smooth bass-driven arrangement. The album then takes a surprisingly dark turn with "Pa, I'm Home", a powerful hip-hop track about domestic violence that shows a serious side Jay had not revealed before. Fantasy also features "Ninja" and "Nunchucks", which began a series of hip-hop tracks featuring traditional Chinese musical elements that would ultimately become another one of Jay's signature musical styles. The album would go on to win six major awards throughout Asia, as well as 20 additional awards for Jay himself. With the awards and sales rolling in, Jay was now a bona-fide star.

The 2002 album The Eight Dimensions is a bit of a transitional album for Jay. By now, there's a sense of expectation for a Jay Chou album, and the lead-up to its release became somewhat of an event. The first release was the music video for the first plug song "The Last Battle", which was essentially a six-minute-long short film. The level of expectation Jay's record company had for The Eight Dimensions was expressed by all the money spent on multiple explosions and gunfights in the video. Furthermore, lyricist Vincent Fang also wrote a photo essay book featuring Jay Chou named "Peninsula Iron Box", the name of a track on the album. Despite its heavy commercialism, The Eight Dimensions retained Jay's signature blend of multiple genres such as hip-hop, R&B, and karaoke-friendly ballad. As expected, The Eight Dimensions again earned Jay multiple awards across the Greater China region and was the best-selling Chinese-language album in several regions, including Hong Kong.

Even though Jay insisted that he had no intentions of changing his musical style, his fourth album Yeh Hwey Mei (named after his mother) offered a more sophisticated Jay. Like Fantasy, it's both a continuation and a slight deviation from his usual style. The first sign of that came with pre-release radio plug, the elegant European-flavored R&B track "In the Name of the Father". The album also features "Coward", one of Jay's first attempts into a more heavy metal-style rock, even though it still featured the signature Chou-style rapping throughout. With another prime summer release date and hungry fans, Yeh Hwei Mei was another multi-million seller and multiple-award winner.

Jay's subsequent albums would continue the established formula - a bit of rock and a bit of R&B fused with Jay's usual slurred rapping, in addition to a few heartwarming ballads. Nevertheless, Jay always added in something new in his arrangements for each album: Common Jasmine Orange featured liberal use of electronic synthesizer; November's Chopin saw Jay's first duet "Coral Sea" (this excludes his cover of "Rooftop", which was first written for Jacky Wu and Landy Wen), as well as his first bubble gum rock song; Still Fantasy featured not only his first Spanish trumpet-driven song, but also his first Bossa Nova ballad. In 2007, Jay took his biggest risk with album On the Run featuring his first American Western country song, "Cowboy on the Run", which ended being a hit with fans as well.

From Music Videos to Feature Films - Jay Chou the Actor
2003 marked Jay's acting debut. However, it was only a cameo in the Hong Kong film Hidden Track , in which he played the object of obsession for the film's main character (the Chinese title of the film literally translates to "Searching for Jay Chou"). Despite his brief appearance in the film, he contributed two songs to it, reinforcing his true role as a musician. In actuality, Jay was actually getting acting practice over the years by playing a variety of roles in his music videos, including a traumatized soldier, a globetrotting spy, and even an Italian gangster.

Finally in 2005, Jay Chou took on his first feature film role in Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's Initial D , the big-budget, Hong Kong-Japan co-produced adaptation of the hit Japanese comic. Jay's introverted personality and cool looks made him a perfect fit for the main character, quiet aspiring racer Takumi. The star-studded film pitted the first-time actor against a cast featuring Shawn Yue, Edison Chen, Jordan Chan, Chapman To, and Hong Kong Film Award winner Anthony Wong. Fans of both Jay and the comic alike flocked to the theaters, making it the highest-grossing Chinese language film in Hong Kong that year. Jay took a slight step back for his second feature film role, playing a pivotal supporting character in Zhang Yimou's period epic Curse of the Golden Flower alongside international superstars Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat. Touted as the most expensive Chinese film at the time, Curse of the Golden Flower remains Jay's biggest project to date. In the film, he plays a warrior prince who conspires with his mother in a coup against his father, the king. Taking the Reins - Jay Chou the Director
Jay began his directorial career with a music video for Nan Quan Mama's debut album in 2004. He then directed four more music videos in 2005, this time for his album November's Chopin. In the following year, he began to take on the role of director for all of his music videos, starting with the songs from Still Fantasy. Jay is now responsible for all the major creative stages of his music videos, from conceptualizing to editing. What's Next for "President Chou"?
Despite Secret's success, Jay has said that directing film is considerably more difficult because of the time constraint and storyline. In the meantime, he continues to direct all of his music videos, including the ones from his latest album On the Run. He also starred in the hit 2008 Lunar New Year sports film Kung Fu Dunk. Thanks to its success in the Chinese box office, a sequel for the film is now in the works, with Chou already signed up to reprise his role as a basketball player with powerful martial arts skills.

Even with all the acting and directing credentials, Jay is still first and foremost a musician. In addition to starring in and directing Secret, he co-composed the film's score with Terdsak Janpan. In April 2007, he established JVR Records, a record company Jay developed with Vincent Fang and his agent. Film, about time traveling lovers in Genghis Khan's Mongolia, will reunite Chou with "Dunk" director Chu Yen-ping.

The film will be produced by Taiwanese production company Chang Hong. The announcement puts to rest rumors that Chou would next be appearing in "Kung Fu Dunk 2."
